Magda Gartner

Mezzo soprano, Magda Gartner, praised for "her weighty, velvety middle voice and her piercing top" (New York Classical Review), made her New York City Opera debut in March 2017 as La terza Elfe in Respighi's La Campana sommersa at Jazz at Lincoln Center. After this very successful production of New York City Opera, she appeared with the same company again a month later as L'Aurora (The Dawn) in Los Elementos at Harlem Stage, New York City. In October 2017, Magda sang the Bel Canto role of Aurelio in a rarely performed opera of Donizetti called, L’Assedio di Calais, (the Siege of Calais) with the young, aspiring opera company Odyssey Opera Boston. Hailed by The Boston Globe for “a voice that could brush the ground and kiss the stratosphere”, the paper called her “the true heart of the opera” and was praised for her convincing “vocalism and acting alike”. (Zoe Madonna) The Donizetti Society wrote: “The real standout of the cast was Magda Gartner as Aurelio, the pants role at the heart of the story. She is a mezzo soprano of real note, handling the beautiful legato of her entrance cavatina and the intricate coloratura of its cabaletta.” Miss Gartner appeared as Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel with Opera Pomme Rouge on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. In Summer 2016, she was Young Artist with Dell’Arte Opera Ensemble (NYC) and was performing Musette in Leoncavallo’s Bohème and Flora in La Traviata. Other roles in her repertoire include Carmen (Carmen), Componist (Ariadne auf Naxos), Octavican (Rosenkavalier), Dorabella (Così fan Tutte) and the title character in Rossini’s Cenerentola. In addition to her vocal studies, Ms. Gartner holds a Master of Music in piano from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.
