Why Wells Fargo rolled its stagecoach into uptown Monday

Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE:WFC) rolled one of its signature stagecoaches into uptown Charlotte Monday morning.

The San Francisco-based bank displayed its historical roots to celebrate Opera Carolina’s upcoming production of Puccini’s The Girl of the West. The stagecoach started its journey outside the Wells Fargo history museum and then proceeded up Tryon Street to the Belk Theater at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.

The bank rolled out a red carpet in front of the theater for the event Monday. There was also a wanted poster hanging at the scene.

Wells Fargo brings out its stagecoaches for community events around the country. The bank keeps about 30 stagecoaches at ranches around the country. The refurbished antiques have made more than 13,000 appearances, Wells Fargo says.

Wells Fargo has been a supporter of Charlotte’s Opera Carolina for years, but this season the company became more involved in the upcoming production because of its Western setting.

The Girl of the West, which takes place in California during the Gold Rush, features a character who is an agent of the Wells Fargo Company named Ashby. Ashby was onsite Monday morning for the stagecoach spectacle in costume. Ashby and a couple other characters from the performance sang and greeted spectators Monday at the bank's museum.

Behind the scenes, Wells Fargo donated time and resources to help Opera Carolina accurately create its props and sets for the production. Wells Fargo’s historical services group provided Opera Carolina with photographs and documents from its archives as references.

“They sent us images from that period, so a lot of what we are using looks exactly like it did in the 1850s,” Meena said in an interview last month. “The wanted poster and some of the imagery — it all mimics that authentic look, even down to the font they were using back then. So it’s really been a lot of fun and really cool.”

Wells Fargo Private Bank is also the season presenting sponsor for Opera Carolina.
