Jason Karn

Jason Karn has impressed critics and audiences alike with his vibrant bright tone and dramatic characterizations. Critics raved about his Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress for the prestigious Merola Program at San Francisco Opera. His performance was described as, “balanced ardency and lovable stupidity with perfect assurance. His tone is vibrant and bright . . . and Karn delivered the role's stirring high notes with aplomb.” (Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle.) Fall of 2007, he made his New York debut at Dicapo Opera as Roméo in Roméo et Juliette with many stellar reviews. The New York Sun Times said, “He has an attractive soft-grained tenor that at its best reminded me a bit of the late Alfredo Kraus. Mr. Karn’s singing was flexible, smoothly phrase, and secure on top.” Recent performances include Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte with Granite State Opera and again with Chautauqua Opera. Last Fall, he returned to Pittsburgh Opera where he sang Al Joad in The Grapes of Wrath. Spring 2007, he completed his 2-year residency with the Pittsburgh Opera Center, where he performed Tamino in The Magic Flute, The Novice in Billy Budd, Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos, Spoletta in Tosca, and Erice in L’Ormindo. In 2006, Jason received rave reviews as Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with Capital Opera of Raleigh. He also reprised the role of Spoletta at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the baton of Maestro John Mauceri. Returning to Charlotte in January 2006, Jason performed the role of Alfredo in Opera Carolina’s production of La Traviata. Previous Opera Carolina performances include the North Carolina premiere of Cold Sassy Tree, Remendado in Carmen, Malcolm in Macbeth, Normano in Lucia di Lammermoor and 2nd Priest/1st Armored Guard in The Magic Flute. He served as an apprentice with the Chautauqua Opera Festival, where he performed in Susannah, Fiddler on the Roof, and Verdi’s Stiffelio. Jason was also a featured soloist in two concerts with the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra and was honored with an Encouragement Award. Jason has also performed Tamino in The Magic Flute for Granite State Opera, Natchez Opera, and was featured as Lt. Cable in Opera Boston's South Pacific. He was selected as a Young Artist with Opera North and as a Vocal Fellow with the Tanglewood Music Festival. Jason holds a BM in voice from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a MM in voice from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
