George Washington III
George Washington III has been a resident artist with Opera Carolina since 1998. His operatic roles have included Balthazar in Menotti's Amahl & the Night Visitors, Elder Ott in Carlisle's Susannah, the Imperial Commissioner in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, and Physician in Verdi's Macbeth, Peter in Humperdink's Hansel & Gretel, Sciarrone in Puccini's Tosca and Dr. Lomax in Floyd's Cold Sassy Tree, and most recently as Dr. Grenvil in Verdi's La Traviata. Mr. Washington also appeared as the Duke of Verona in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette at the Sugar Creek Symphony and Song Festival in Watseka, IL in 2004. He also appeared in concert as the prelude to the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra three times between 1999-2001. In May of 2007, he made is symphony debut with the Peoria (IL) Symphony Orchestra in a concert performance of Porgy and Bess to enthusiastic reviews. His voice has been called "booming and thrilling" by reviewers. The Classical Voice of North Carolina described him as "a rich bass in the making." Mr. Washington is also an accomplished voice actor, having voiced projects and commercials for Coca-Cola, Wachovia, Bank of America, Disney, the NCAA and Verizon. Mr. Washington graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and resides in Charlotte, NC.
