Deborah Fields

As a veteran of the stage, critically acclaimed artist Deborah Fields has already performed over fifty leading and supporting roles in opera, operetta and musical theatre. Known throughout the U.S. for her larger-than-life portrayal of Katisha in the The Mikado, the Washington Post described her performance as a “bloodthirsty and lovesick harridan” who “imbued the role with equal parts of hilarity and pathos.” Audiences at Wolf Trap, Skylight Opera Theatre, Opera Carolina, Lake George Opera, Piedmont Opera and the famed New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players have been mesmerized and enthralled by her powerful voice and comedic artistry and timing as Katisha, Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore and Ruth in Pirates of Penzance. Deborah has been honored more than once to work one on one with operatic composers such as Carlisle Floyd, who personally selected her to debut the role of Effie Belle in the opera’s southeastern premiere of Cold Sassy Tree after experiencing her moving performance as Mrs. McLean in his opera Susannah. Robert Ward, as well, hand selected Deborah for what would be her professional operatic debut at the age of eighteen, to sing the role of Rebecca Nurse in his award winning opera The Crucible. Ned Rorem stated that Deborah’s Mrs. Soames in Our Town, “was as alive and real as he had imagined when he composed the music around the character.”
