Mezzo-Soprano Margaret Thompson is lauded for her distinguished career having graced the renowned stages of Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, and the historic Gewandhaus in Leipzig, among many others. Debuting at the Metropolitan Opera as Mercedes in Carmen, Ms. Thompson has since been a regular performer at the celebrated theater. This past spring she performed Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, with Washington National Opera, returns to Los Angeles Opera this fall as Madame Larina in Eugene Onegin, and returns to the MET in the 2011-2012 season for Madama Butterfly, and The Makropolous Case. Having begun her career in the opera houses of Germany, Austria, and Spain, Ms. Thompson has mastered over fifty operatic roles including Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Fricka in Die Walküre, Charlotte in Werther, Eboli in Don Carlos, Venus in Tannhaüser, Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos, Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito , and Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro. She has performed opposite such greats as Plácido Domingo, Anna Netrebko, Matti Salminen, Patricia Racette, Roberto Alagna, Angela Gheorghiu, Dolora Zajick, and Vladimir Chernov at the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro Real de Madrid, Los Angeles Opera, Washington National Opera, Volksoper Wien, Spoleto Festival and New York City Opera. Career highlights from Ms. Thompson’s international career include Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, and Madame Larina in Eugene Onegin , with the Bremer Theater (Bremen); Eboli in Don Carlos, the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Charlotte in Werther, and Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, with the Stadttheater Pforzheim; Anna in Die Bürgschaft, with Dessau’s Kurt Weill Festival; Rossweisse in Die Walküre, with the Teatro Real de Madrid; Margareta in Schumann’s Genoveva , with Oper Leipzig and the Volksoper Wien; Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro , with the Buhnen der Stadt Bielefeld and the Stadttheater Pforzheim; Orfeo in Orfeo et Euridice, Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito, and Nicklausse in Les Contes D’Hoffman, with Mönchengladbach; Octavian is Der Rosenkavalier, with the Theater Krefeld; Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte, with the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater (Oldenburg); Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, in the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, and performances at the Meininger Theater (Meiningen). Recently in the US she was heard as Zeresh in Esther, with New York City Opera; Flora in La Traviata, with Washington National Opera and Los Angeles Opera; Anna in Die Bürgschaft, with the Spoleto Festival USA and Judith in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh.. Ms. Thompson has also sung with conductors such as James Conlon, Alan Gilbert, Peter Schneider, Julius Rudel, Mstislav Rostropovich, Kent Nagano, Lawrence Foster and Asher Fisch. She has been named the 1st Prize winner of several competitions including the “Christa Ludwig” Vocal Academy Competition, the “Salzburg Mozarteum” Competition, the “German Silver Medallion” for “Best Singer of the Year”, Prize Winner/Finalist for the “Sylvia Geszty Coloratura” Competition and nominated in Opernwelt Magazine as “Best Young Singer of the Year” for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
