Fernando Portari

Born in Rio de Janeiro, he began his vocal studies under the guidance of his father. He also undertook piano studies with Zinaide Liggiero and drama studies with Antonio Mercado. In 1991 he won the “Lina Kubala Competition” and a scholarship offered by the “Superior School of Music” of Karlsruhe in Germany, where he studied with the brazilian tenor Aldo Baldin. He has just had a remarkable success performing La traviata at the Oper in Köln, at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki and at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem at the Mozart Konzert in Munich and in Bremen with the Bremer Philarmoniker, and Nabucco at the National Opera in Warszawa. Among his future plans are Roméo et Juliette at the Teatro alla Scala, La bohème at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, I Vespri Siciliani at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and Faust at the Liceu in Barcelona. He will be heard in concert with the Muenchner Rundfunkorchester in Munich. The last seasons has brought him to perform Werther at the Teatro Massimo “Vincenzo Bellini” in Catania and in La Coruña, La bohème at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, La traviata at the Staatsoper in Berlin and at the Staatsoper in Hamburg, Rigoletto at the Novaya Opera in Moscow and in Warszawa, La rondine at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Anna Bolena and Gianni Schicchi at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Don Giovanni (Don Ottavio) at the Teatro Bellini di Catania, Il crociato in Egitto at the La Fenice di Venezia and Massenet’s Manon (Des Grieux) at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin under Daniel Barenboim’s baton. He made his italian debut as Jaquino in Fidelio at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia (1988), where he returned to perfom as Riccardo in Donizetti’s Maria de Rohan (1999 season opening). In 2000 he sang La rondine at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (under the baton of Gianluigi Gelmetti) and Rossini’s Stabat Mater in Florence. He took part in several operatic productions in São Paulo including Massenet’s Manon, Falstaff, Roméo et Juliette, Haydn’s L´infedelta delusa, L’elisir d´amore, Lo schiavo by Carlos Gomes, Rigoletto, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, Les pêcheurs de perles, Don Pasquale, L’elisir d´amore, Don Giovanni, Idomeneo, Cosi fan tutte and La bohème. He also performed Condor by Carlos Gomes at the Manaus Opera Festival. Professor of the Faculty of Music of the University Ribeirão Preto, he recorded the complete works for voice and piano of Gilberto Mendes, accompanied by pianist Rubens Ricciardi. He won several prizes including the prize as “Best Opera Singer of the Year” (APCA) and the “Carlos Gomes Prize”.
