David Won

Distinguished baritone, David Won, makes his Seattle Opera debut in two roles in the 2009-2010 season: Ford in Falstaff and the Doctor in Daron Hagen’s world premiere of Amelia, as well as his Opera Carolina debut as Marcello in La Bohème. A recent graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s prestigious Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Mr. Won will return next season for the company’s production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Throughout the recent 2008-2009 season, Mr. Won continued to build his relationship with the MET performing Prince Yamadori in Madama Butterfl y, Huntsman in Rusalka, Capadocian in Salome and Perichaud in La Rondine. He also marked his debut at Opera Cleveland as Ford in Falstaff. In the MET’s Lindemann Program, Mr. Won made his debut as Gregorio in a new production ofRomeo et Juliette starring Natalie Dessay. The following season, he reprised the role opposite to Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna, which was broadcasted in HD in movie theaters around the world. In addition, he appeared as Prince Yamadori in Anthony Minghella’s new production of Madama Butterfly – an HD broadcast – under the baton of Maestro James Levine. Other recent opera engagements have included Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale with Connecticut Opera, Escamillo in Carmen, Chief Policeman in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Baltimore Opera, Achillas in Giulio Cesare at Utah Festival Opera, and his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Don Carlo under the baton of James Levine. Mr. Won has won numerous international competitions and awards including first place in the Baltimore International Vocal Competition, first place in the Violetta Dupond Opera Florham International Competition, first place in the Mario Lanza Opera Competition, first place in the Washington International Vocal Competition, first place in the Civic Morning Vocal Competition, second prize winner in the Jensen Foundation, first male prize in Liederkranz Foundation, and third prize in Caruso International Competition.
