Peter Strummer

One of America's foremost character bass-baritones, Peter Strummer has earned a reputation for endowing his buffo characterizations with further depth and humanity. His signature portrayals have been described as “highly individual, each formidably different whether as Bartolo or Don Magnifico or Beckmesser or Pasquale.” Mr. Strummer was invited by Maestro James Levine to make his operatic debut as Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Beckmesser in Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg and Dansker in Billy Budd. In 2009, he performs Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera Carolina and Calgary Opera, and Sacristan in Tosca with Arizona Opera, among other engagements to be announced. In 2008, he performed Sacristan in Tosca at New York City Opera and the Seattle Opera, Benoit/Alcindoro in La boheme with Tulsa Opera, Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro with the Atlanta Opera, and Magnifico in La cenerentola with Atlanta Opera. Most recent engagements include Sacristan in Tosca with Cleveland Opera and Baltimore Opera, and Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro with Michigan Opera Theatre, Austin Lyric Opera, Atlanta Opera, and in his debut with Opera Lyra Ottawa. Additional recent performances include Major Domo in Ariadne auf Naxos with Dallas Opera; Daland in The Flying Dutchman with Arizona Opera; Seattle Opera's Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle covering Alberich; a return to New York City Opera as Rashid in Haroun, the title role of Don Pasquale and as Candy in Of Mice and Men; Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro with Baltimore Opera and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Sulpice in La fille du Régiment in his debut with Michigan Opera Theater, a return to Opera Lyra Ottawa and Florentine Opera as the title role of Don Pasquale, a return to New Orleans Opera as Alberich in Das Rheingold; and a return to San Francisco Opera as Benoit/Alcindoro in La boheme, the Badger in The Cunning Little Vixen, and Alcalde in La forza del Destino. Mr. Strummer is best known for his portrayals of the title role in Don Pasquale, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Le nozze di Figaro, Klingsor in Parsifal, Ferrando in Il trovatore, and Pizarro in Fidelio, Mustafa in L’italiana in Algeri, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Don Alfonso in Cosi fan tutte, Frank in Die Fledermaus, Sacristan in Tosca, Music Master in Ariadne auf Naxos, Baron Zeta in The Merry Widow, Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Geronte in Manon Lescaut with companies including the Houston Grand Opera, Seattle Opera, Dallas Opera, Washington Opera, Portland Opera, Baltimore Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Minnesota Opera, Tulsa Opera, Santa Fe Opera, San Diego Opera, Opera Colorado, Cincinnati Opera, New Orleans Opera, Vancouver Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Central City Opera, Opéra de Québec, L'Opéra de Montréal, Opera Ontario, Calgary Opera, Madrid's Teatro de la Zarzuela, Städtische Bühnen Heidelberg, the Canadian Opera Company, Opera Lyra Ottawa, Edmonton Opera, Sinfonia da Camera, Landestheater Linz, and Landestheater Salzburg. Many of Peter Strummer's performances have been recorded and broadcast throughout the world. His appearances with the Canadian Opera Company as Melitone in La Forza del Destino and as the Sacristan in Tosca were aired on CBC Television, and his portrayal of the Music Master in Ariadne auf Naxos with Milwaukee's Florentine Opera was made into a film, which has been seen throughout the United States on PBS. His performances as the Sacristan in Tosca, Melitone in La Forza del Destino, and documentary film The Making of an Opera featuring Mr. Strummer as Melitone in La Forza del Destino, was recorded by CBC Television and is available on commercial video in North America and Europe. His performance as Devilshoof in The Bohemian Girl with Central City Opera has been released on Voce Records.
