Madama Butterfly

In Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, honor fells the former geisha Cio-Cio-San with the cruelest of cuts. As her arranged marriage to American naval lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton hauntingly echoes the early 20th century casualties of American imperialism, we see the fragile psyche of Cio-Cio-San create a delusory present that destroys her future. Delusions aside, the passions are rich, the death inevitable, and the child…well the child is achingly real.
