Metropolitan Opera to Present Free Summer Recital Series and Live in HD Festival

The Metropolitan Opera announced today that it will present a series of free recitals this summer in various parks throughout the city in addition to free, public encore-screenings of its Live in HD transmissions in Lincoln Center Plaza.
Presented in collaboration with City Parks Foundation, the company's summer recital series will include six free concerts in all five boroughs from July 12 through 29. No tickets will be required. The opening concert of the recital series will take place at the Central Park SummerStage on July 12 at 8:00 P.M., and will feature baritone Nathan Gunn performing with soprano Susanna Phillips and tenor Michael Fabiano; they will be accompanied by pianists Jonathan Kelly and Julie Gunn.
Subsequent concerts will take place in Crotona Park (Bronx), Brooklyn Bridge Park (Queens), Tappen Park (Staten Island), Queensbridge Park (Queens) and Jackie Robinson Park (Manhattan), and will feature performances by Monica Yunus, Phillips, Fabiano, Matthew Plenk, and Donovan Singletary; Jonathan Kelly will accompany the singers. All recitals will last approximately one hour, except for the Brooklyn concert, which will be 90 minutes.
Beginning on August 28, the Met's second Summer HD Festival will feature encore presentations of ten of the company's Live in HD transmissions on consecutive evenings. The presentations will include rebroadcasts of the company's Tosca starring Karita Mattila and Marcelo Álvarez (August 28); the company's family-friendly abbreviated Magic Flute (Aug. 29); Der Rosenkavalier, starring Renée Fleming, Susan Graham and Christine Schäfer (Aug. 30); John Adams' Doctor Atomic, starring Gerald Finley (Aug. 31); Les Contes d’Hoffmann, featuring Anna Netrebko and Joseph Calleja (September 1); La Bohème, featuring Angela Gheorghiu and Ramon Vargas (Sept. 2); Hansel and Gretel, featuring Christine Schäfer, Alice Coote and Philip Langridge (Sept. 3); Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Turandot, featuring Maria Guleghina in the title role and Marcello Giordani as Calàf (Sept. 4); Aida starring Violeta Urmana, Dolora Zajick and Johan Botha (Sept. 5); and Bizet’s Carmen, starring Elīna Garanča and Roberto Alagna. Start times for the showings, which are free with no tickets required, range from 7:15 P.M. through 8:00 P.M.
