Ok, I must be honest, I had never been to the Opera in Charlotte until last week. Why don't I go one step further and admit, I've never been to the Opera at all. Shocked? You should be!!!! I live for theatre!
With nearly 11 years experience in the Entertainment world (including being on the stage myself while living in Atlanta) I have a huge appreciation for any type of theatre. To me, that is TRUE acting. That is a TRUE performance. There are no "takes". There are no re-dos. All eyes are on the stage, on the performers and that is truly their moment to SHINE.
Last Thursday I attended H.M.S. Pinafore at Belk Theatre presented by Opera Carolina. When offered the chance, I jumped!
"The two-act operetta takes the audience on an uproariously entertaining journey aboard Her Majesty’s Ship Pinafore, poking fun at the Royal Navy and British society as it gently satirizes the escapades of love and romance between members of mismatched social classes."
The stage was full of amazingly talented individuals. From vocalists to comedic artists, there was not a moment without energy which obviously was filtered throughout the audience.
The cast included tenor Gary Briggle as Sir Joseph Porter; soprano Alicia Berneche as Josephine; tenor Colm Fitzmaurice as Ralph Rackstraw; baritone John Muriello as Captain Corcoran; mezzo-soprano Deborah Fields as Little Buttercup; and bass Matthew Treviño as Dick Deadeye. Opera Carolina’s production of H.M.S. Pinafore was directed by Bill Theisen, artistic director of Milwaukee’s Skylight Opera Theater, and conducted by James Meena, general director & principal conductor of Opera Carolina.
I am thrilled my first experience with this piece of theatre was through Opera Carolina and Belk Theatre and even more so thrilled I was able to experience H.M.S. Pinafore. It was a perfect "first time" experience at the Opera and I look forward to many more in the future.
H.M.S. Pinafore rounded out the 62nd Season at Opera Carolina. Kudos to them for such great success. Their next show Il Trovatore will begin in the fall! You can find more information at operacarolina.org.
And by the way, H.M.S. Pinafore will NOT be my last show. You'll see me again October ;)
