“Centering the show was soprano Maureen O’Flynn’s beautifully sung, superbly played Marguerite. Her voice, formerly a lyric coloratura, seems to be settling as a lyric. The jewel song…climactic phrase and the end of the church scene were sumptuously, even powerfully sung. At lower volume, a quick vibrato helped make the Roi de Thulé ballad a poignant, time-stopping moment. O’Flynn is a subtle actress who still looks every inch a young woman, and her characterization of Marguerite rang so true that it was hard to look away even when she wasn’t singing.” – Opera News
Opera Carolina's national broadcast of its 2008 production of Faust on NPR World of Opera will air from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 11, 2010. The program is carried on 74 stations nationally and streamed on the internet. Cities not receiving NPR World of Opera can listen on the internet at wdav.org.
The UZAN Division of Pinnacle Arts Management represented several leading roles in the production: Metropolitan Opera soprano Maureen O'Flynn as Marguerite, Baritone Corey McKern as Valentin, and Conductor James Meena, who serves as General and Artistic Director of Opera Carolina. Other noted artists in the production include James Valenti as Faust and Chester Patton as Mephistopheles.
Of Mo. Meena’s performance, a reporter for the local Salisbury Post wrote, “He was conducting this lengthy work by memory. Once I had that realization, I found it hard to take my eyes away from Meena. He was confidently and effortlessly giving every tempo, cue, dynamic and often even mouthing the words with the singers. I was so fascinated by his conducting, it took the devil himself to draw my attention back to the stage.”
Of baritone Corey McKern’s performance, the Charlotte Observer said, “As Valentin, Marguerite’s brother, Corey McKern delivered the noble aria that’s the centerpiece of his role in ringing tones.” This season, Mr. McKern can be seen as Marcello in La Bohème at the the Santa Fe Opera, Opera Hong Kong and Michigan Opera Theatre, among other engagements.
