Opera Carolina Announces New Approach to ‘The Marriage of Figaro’
Opera Company Evolves Theatrical Staging to Bring Audience a Fresh Experience
Posted: Tuesday, February 24th
Opera Carolina, the largest opera company in the Carolinas, is taking a new approach for its production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. For the season’s third operatic performance, Opera Carolina is planning a new approach for the traditional stage that will create a new engaging setup for the audience to experience. The Marriage of Figaro will be played in a semi-thrust, theatrical style, which is a special style compared to traditional setups.
The players of Mozart's comedy will be on what is normally the orchestra pit, performing the opera at arms length to the audience. The orchestra will be mid-stage, sometimes revealed to the audience, and sometimes hidden by a black-out scrim upon which projections and lighting effects will take place.
"Mozart's masterpiece is essentially an intimate work that rises or falls on the strength of the individual characters and their interaction with each other," said James Meena, general director and principal conductor of Opera Carolina. "Playing the opera as an intimate, theatrical piece is not only in keeping with the spirit of Mozart and daPonte, but Beaumarchais himself."
The Marriage of Figaro will be performed at the Belk Theater of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center March 7 at 8:00 p.m., March 8 at 2:00 p.m. & March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available now by calling 704.372.1000 or visit us online at www.operacarolina.org.
