Weak of Body, Strong of Heart:
Amahl and the Night Visitors celebrates the holiday spirit
Posted: Wednesday, November 29th
Charlotte, NC–Opera Carolina presents the holiday favorite, Amahl and the Night Visitors, December 15th and 16th at the McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square. Amahl, and young crippled boy, and his widowed mother find themselves buried in poverty and faced with the shameful prospect of begging for survival. One night, as Amahl sings about the beauty of one particularly large star that is shinning in the sky, three Magi on their way to Bethlehem stop at Amahl's house to ask for rest. They are following the star so that they might bestow gifts on a newborn child. Envious and jealous that another child will receive these gifts while her own son remains hungry and poor, Amahl's mother tries to steal some of the Magi's gold, but is caught by one of the servants. Amahl pleads on behalf of his mother, and they are forgiven. The Magi tell Amahl and his mother who this newborn babe is and the promise that the child will build his kingdom on love alone. Moved by their words, Amahl's mother wishes she could offer the child a gift but laments she has nothing to give. Amahl, however, hands the Magi his most precious possession, his wooden crutch, and in doing so he is miraculously healed of his lameness. Recognizing his blessing, Amahl and his mother set out with the Magi to journey to Bethlehem to give thanks and praise to the Christ Child. Since 1951, this opera has become a holiday classic and has inspired audiences of all ages to find strength in the pure of heart.
