Melinda Whittington is a versatile singer and powerful performer whose voice has been described as "the very embodiment of singing refinement and power." This year, Melinda is a resident artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. In her recent appearance as Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte, she was described as "an utter treatÖ She wowed the audience time and time again. Fiordiligi is given abundant vocal opportunities to shine in both acts, and she capitalized on every one. Her voice had beauty, power, range, and never faltered."
Melinda will spend the summer of 2014 as a Filene Young Artist with Wolf Trap Opera Company, performing the role of MicaŽla in Carmen. In March she will participate in an exciting evening of new opera with Opera Philadelphia and their composers in residence, Lembit Beecher and Missy Mazzoli, and in June will be the soprano soloist for Philadelphia Sinfonia's performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the Kimmel Center.
In 2013 Melinda sang on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera as a national semi-finalist in the National Council competition, after winning both the South Carolina district and Southeast Regional competitions. She was also a finalist in the Gerda Lissner Vocal Competition, receiving an Encouragement Award, and the winner of the Charlotte Opera Guild Competition. In January she made her professional mainstage debut with Opera Carolina, as the Second Lady in The Magic Flute. In June she sang a "positively fierce" Donna Elvira with Green Mountain Opera Festival. As the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana with Back Bay Chorale in April was described as having an "elegant presence and pearly tone."
Melinda spent the summer of 2012 as a Merola young artist at San Francisco Opera, where she performed scenes as the title role in Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Barber's Vanessa, and Bizet's Le jolie fille de Perth. She also covered the title role of Sandrina in Mozart's early opera, La finta giardiniera. Also in 2012, Melinda won the South Carolina district of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, receiving an Encouragement Award at the Southeast Regional Competition, and won the 2012 Charlotte Opera Guild competition.
Melinda's other recent roles include Violetta in La traviata, the title role in Alcina, Mimž in La BohŤme, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, MicaŽla in Carmen, and Marie in The Bartered Bride. She completed her Master's of Music degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2009, and received her Bachelor's of Music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005.
