Matthew Treviño is proving to be one of the most sought after young basses. Of recent performances as Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, the San Francisco Chronicle said, “Matthew Treviño was a sonorous and neatly malevolent Don Basilio,” and the New York Times praised his “delightfully unctuous portrayal.”
The 2009-2010 season engagements include Commendatore in Don Giovanni at the Fort Worth Opera, Sparafucile in Rigoletto at the San Antonio Opera, Angelotti/Jailer in Tosca at Nashville Opera, the title role of Don Giovanni at Stockton Opera, Dick Deadeye in H.M.S. Pinafore at Lyric Opera of Kansas City, as well as covering the role of Victor in the world premiere of Before Night Falls at the Fort Worth Opera. In the recent 2008-2009 season, he performed Colline in La Bohème with Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Fresno Grand Opera, Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Nevada Opera, Sargeant in The Pirates of Penzance at the Sacramento Opera and Pistola in Falstaff at Opera Cleveland.
Additional recent engagements include Alcade in La Forza del Destino and Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia in his 2008 Caramoor Festival debut, Ramfis in Aida with Nevada Opera, Monterone in Rigoletto and Sam in Un Ballo in Maschera with Opera Santa Barbara, Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro in Coeur d’Alene, Durufle’s Requiem with Marin Symphony, his Michigan Opera Theatre debut in Turandot and Dallas Opera debut in Salome. In addition, he was contracted for his Teatro Municipal de Santiago debut as Alvise Baodero in Ponchielli's La Gioconda.
A Texas native, Mr. Treviño began his career singing with the Fort Worth Opera in a variety of operas including Susannah, Salome and Rigoletto. He went on to perform in leading roles with other Texas companies including Amarillo Opera, Waco Opera, Waco Symphony, and the Dallas Bach Society. After relocating to the San Francisco Bay area, Mr. Treviño joined the San Francisco Opera’s Merola and Resident Artist in Education program, performing Sylvano in La Calisto, Simone in Gianni Schicchi, Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte, which later toured nationally with San Francisco Opera's Western Opera Theater.
As a concert artist, Mr. Treviño has performed with noted symphony orchestras around the country in new and standard works including Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Handel’s Messiah, Verdi’s Requiem, Bach’s Magnificat, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Mendelssohn’s Psalm 115, as well as Bernstein’s Dybbuk with the San Francisco Ballet and Courcelle’s Mass with the Orchestra of New Spain.
Mr. Treviño has studied with noted teachers, coaches, and conductors such as Sheri Greenawald, John VanCura, Tom Krause, Dean Williamson, Martin Katz, Willie Anthony Waters, Steven Blier, Stephen Dubberly, Valery Ryvkin, Kathryn Cathcart, Randall Behr, Joseph Colaneri, Scott Bergeson, Gary Wedow, Robert Larson, Joseph Illick. He has been directed by John Copley, David Gately, Vera Lucia Calabria, Herbert Bliss, Jose Maria Condemi, Daniel Helfgot, Stephanie Sundine, Michael Scarola, and Yefim Maizel.
Mr. Treviño is a graduate of Baylor University in Waco Texas and was a member of the Merola Opera Program, San Francisco Opera Center’s Resident Artist in Education, and the Des Moines Young Artist Program. He was a finalist in the Loren L Zachary Foundation Competition, Dallas Opera Guild Competition, Fort Worth Opera’s McCammon Voice Competition, Shreveport Opera’s Singer of the Year Competition, and was the recipient of the Thomas Stewart Award for Vocal Excellence at Baylor University.
