William Roberts, native of New York, makes his professional debut with Opera Carolina this season. Reviewed as a “larger than life and self assured performer” (Cape Cod Times), William has tackled a large variety of roles in Opera, Operetta, and Music Theatre. William will sing Basilio in Il Barbiere di Sivilia and Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro in Opera Carolina’s 2008/2009 season.
Mr. Roberts’ was most recently featured as the title role in Boston Opera Collaborative’s staging of Don Giovanni. A frequent performer throughout the greater Boston area in 2006-2008;William has been seen in the roles of Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte, Dr Gregg in Douglas Moore’s Gallantry, Dulcamara in L’Elisir D’amore, Collatinus in The Rape of Lucretia, and Reverend Hale in The Crucible. His solo work during his two years in Boston included the Bass Soloist in Handel’s Messiah and a concert performance of Lucia di Lammermor as Raimondo.
William recently earned his Masters Degree in Opera from The Boston Conservatory in May of 2008. At the Conservatory; William studied under Baritone Robert Honeysucker and sang under the direction of Sally Stunkel, Kirsten Z. Cairns and acclaimed Baritone Sanford Sylvan. William sang under the batons of Karl Paulnack and Bruce Hangen while completing his Masters degree. A frequent performer of Operetta, William completed two consecutive seasons and eighteen different Musicals/Operettas with The College Light Opera Company in Cape Cod. Favorite roles over these past two seasons include Pooh Bah in the The Mikado, Dick Deadeye in HMS Pinafore, Etienne Grandet in Naughty Marrietta, and Cosmo Constantine in Call Me Madam.
William received his Bachelor in Vocal Performance from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2006 studying under Tenor Sam Scifres. Operatic opportunities at the university included Olin Blitch in Susannah, the title role in Gianni Schicchi, and Dr Falke in Die Fledermaus. Mr. Roberts’ featured solo work at Illinois Wesleyan includes the Bass Soloist in Schubert’s Mass in G and Fauré’s Requiem. William has participated in master classes with Martin Katz, Kurt Phinney, Fiora Contino and Richard Collins. William is a two-time finalist with NATS Central Illinois Division.
