Take a step back in time!

Charlotte, NC (February 9, 2006) - Join Opera Carolina and Lady Baker's Tea Trolley before the Sunday performance of Cinderella for a Traditional English Tea! Hosted on March 12, 2006 from 12 noon to 1:30 PM in the McColl Room of the Belk Theater, this tea will feature tasty treats, including scones with clotted cream, finger sandwiches, tea breads, sweats, fruit and various types of tea.

The custom of gathering for tea began in England in 1840, when Anna Seventh Duchess of Bedford, decided to relieve her late afternoon hunger pangs with some tea, bread and cake. Becoming accustomed to this treat, she invited her friends and, by the late 1880s, ladies all over England were gathering at each other's homes for what became known as the afternoon tea. Brewed in a heated silver pot, the refreshing beverage was served on a silver tray and poured into fine porcelain cups. A repast of crumpets, crustless sandwiches, and pates were served on fine china. Later, scones were added upon the request of Queen Victoria, who enjoyed them with butter, jam, lemon curd or clotted cream.

Tickets for the English Tea are $24 for adults and $18 for children. RSVPs are requested by March 1, 2006 as space is limited. To RSVP, please call (704) 332-7177 ext 207.

Opera Carolina's production of Cinderella will be performed in the Belk Theater on March 9 at 7:30 PM, March 11 at 8 PM and March 12 at 2 PM. In this hilarious take on the familiar tale of a hapless kitchen maid (starring Grammy nominated artist and Metropolitan Opera soprano Vivica Genaux), her greedy stepfather and social-climbing stepsisters, our heroine meets her Prince Charming in true fairytale fashion when he changes places with his valet to search for his true love. Forbidden to attend the ball, Cinderella finds a fairy godmother of sorts in the Prince's tutor. Mistaken identities abound, but goodness and true love triumph in the end. Tickets range from $15-$92 and can be purchased by calling the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Box Office at (704) 372-1000 or online at OperaCarolina.org.
