State Arts Council awards $1,289,739 in Western North Carolina

Now in its 30th year, the North Carolina Arts Council's Grassroots Arts Program will fund $2,739,500 in grants for arts programs and projects in North Carolina counties during 2007–2008. Through the Grassroots Arts Program and general support funds, Western North Carolina will receive $1,289,739.

Created in 1977 by the General Assembly, the Grassroots Arts Program provides funding to each county on a per capita basis. The program empowers local arts councils and arts organizations to plan programs and projects for their citizens that reflect the arts and cultural traditions and resources specific to their area.

The following organizations in, Avery, Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga and Yancey counties received grant awards:

* Avery Arts Council: Various arts programs and subgrants ($9,931).

* North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service (Avery County): One-week opera residency with Opera Carolina at the 4-H summer camp ($4,827).

* Asheville Area Arts Council: Teaching Artist Boot Camp and arts-integrated residency building for teaching artists with classroom teachers ($10,000).

* Asheville Area Arts Council: Various arts programs and subgrants ($59,672).

* Asheville Art Museum: General operating support ($50,000).

* Asheville Symphony: General operating support ($50,000).

* BellaLuna Theatre: Organizational development with Arts Action Research ($2,800).

* Black Mountain Center for the Arts: Organizational development with Arts Action Research ($2,800).

* Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center: Exhibition "Breaking New Ground: The Studio Potter + Black Mountain College" and related programs ($8,900).

* North Carolina Stage Company: Three audience development activities targeting audience diversity development ($10,000).

* North Carolina Stage Company: Organizational development with Arts Action Research ($2,800).

* Pack Place Performing Arts: General operating support ($30,000).

* Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre: General operating support ($25,000).

* Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance: New, full-length multi-media production of "The Scarlet Letter" ($10,000).

* Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance: Organizational development with Arts Action Research ($2,800).

* YMI Cultural Center: Sustaining support ($18,000).

* Brasstown Concert Association: Two early music concerts from its series, with audience development programs ($3,500).

* John C. Campbell Folk School: Administration and musical performances in partnership with two other arts organizations ($12,061).

* John C. Campbell Folk School: General operating support ($95,000).

* John C. Campbell Folk School: Traditional Arts Programs in Schools: Junior Appalachian Musicians Program ($7,500).

* Clay County Historical and Arts Council: Various arts programs and subgrants ($7,977).

* Graham County Schools: One-week dance residency by the Carlota Santana Spanish Dance Company at Robbinsville Elementary School ($10,000).

* Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center: Addition of two new programs on its series "An Appalachian Evening" to reach new audiences ($8,500).

* Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center: Festivals and performances ($7,488).

* Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center: Traditional Arts Programs in Schools: Junior Appalachian Musicians Program ($7,500).

* Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center: Position of program director ($15,000).

* Haywood County Arts Council: Traditional Arts Programs in Schools: Junior Appalachian Musicians Program ($7,500).

* Haywood County Arts Council: Various arts programs and subgrants ($19,528).

* Arts Council of Henderson County: Various arts programs and subgrants ($30,238).

* Flat Rock Playhouse: General operating support ($40,000).

* Jackson County Arts Council: Various arts programs and subgrants ($14,395).

* Arts Council of Macon County: Various arts programs and subgrants ($13,727).

* Madison County Arts Council: Two one-week residencies in the schools by poet Glenis Redmond and Poetry Alive! ($2,665).

* Madison County Arts Council: Various arts programs and subgrants ($10,530).

* McDowell Arts Council Association: Various arts programs and subgrants ($16,197).

* Penland School of Crafts: General operating support ($95,000).

* Penland School of Crafts: Teaching Artist Initiative ($14,000).

* Spruce Pine Main Street: Creation of an iron sculpture by artist/blacksmith Elizabeth Brim in downtown Spruce Pine as part of its Streetscape Plan ($7,000).

* Toe River Arts Council (Mitchell County): Various arts programs and subgrants ($9,370).

* Tryon Arts and Crafts: Construction of a new Iron Forge Studio on the campus of Tryon Arts and Crafts ($4,500).

* Tryon Fine Arts Center: Five-day community residency by Hot House Jazz in Henderson, Polk and Rutherford counties ($3,500).

* Tryon Fine Arts Center: Design phase of the renovation of the arts center building ($2,500).

* Tryon Fine Arts Center: Administration and subgrants ($10,224),

* Rutherford County Arts Parks and Recreation Committee: Marketing materials and subgrants ($21,081).

* Museum of the Cherokee Indian: General operating support ($65,000).

* Smoky Mountain Music Association: Traditional Arts Programs in Schools: Junior Appalachian Musicians Program ($7,500).

* Swain County Center for the Arts: In-school and community performances and artist lecture/demonstrations and workshops ($8,872).

* Unto These Hills: General operating support ($55,000).

* Brevard Music Center: General operating support ($95,000).

* Transylvania Community Arts Council: Various arts programs and subgrants ($12,900).

* Appalachian State University Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series: Four programs as part of the Visiting Writers Series ($4,500).

* Downtown Boone Development Association: Development of a unique gateway to downtown Boone through landscape artwork and permanent, public sculpture ($2,500).

* Horn in the West: Fifty-sixth season ($5,000).

* Watauga County Arts Council: One-week storytelling/songwriting/puppetry residency by Silver Trout Arts at Valle Crucis Elementary School ($3,047).

* Watauga County Arts Council: Various arts programs and subgrants ($16,061).

* Watauga County Arts Council: Traditional Arts Programs in Schools: Junior Appalachian Musicians Program ($7,500).

* Toe River Arts Council (Yancey County): Various arts programs and subgrants ($9,988).

* Toe River Arts Council (Yancey County): Second Annual Carolina Mountains Literary Festival ($5,000).
