The Opera Guild of Charlotte will present its 42nd Annual Vocal Competition on March 19th at a new location – Dana Auditorium, Queens University of Charlotte. Having awarded more than 160 aspiring North Carolina voice students cash awards in order to help facilitate their further study, the Guild is moving the location of the popular event from the UNCC campus to allow easier access to the public. Opera lovers may recall the names of several past winners: John Fowler, Todd Greer, John Fulton and Sandra Cotton. Other winners whose names have enriched the Opera scene are Leslie Paliyenko, Stephanie Dillard, Kim Carper, Lucas Meechem and David Blalock. Those who have attended past competitions say it was like getting in on the ground floor as they cheered on the stars of tomorrow and watched their careers progress as they performed all over the world and even returned to sing in some of Opera Carolina productions. Again this year Jane Dillard (retired Professor of Voice at UNC) will co-chair the event with the help of Leslie Paliyenko (Opera Carolina Board member and Director of MCNC). There is no charge to attend the event which will begin at 10:00 and will finish with a reception for all winners and attendees at approximately 3p.m.
