cARTwheels
The Barber is Back!—Opera Carolina is proud to participate in the statewide touring program cARTwheels with a special, 50-minute version of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. The Barber will be presented in seven counties throughout North Carolina: Chatham, Columbus, Moore, Orange, Pender and Randolph Counties, kicking-off with a performance in Mecklenburg County for more than 1,200 CMS third grade students in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).
This 50-minute version of The Barber of Seville features the comic genius of Beaumarchais and famous music of Gioachino Rossini. The story of the opera centers around old Dr. Bartolo, who is determined to marry his young ward Rosina and capture her dowry. However, the clever barber Figaro and the handsome Count Almaviva win the girl’s heart and foil Bartolo’s plans.
The Barber of Seville will be sung in English and is age appropriate for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Teachers will receive a performance guide to prepare the students to attend the performances.
This production stars Opera Carolina Resident Artists Jenny Chen (The Marriage of Figaro, 2009) as Rosina, Daniel Ross Hinson (The Marriage of Figaro, 2009) as Count Almaviva, Steven Jepson (The Pirates of Penzance, 2007) as Figaro, Daniel Boye (Amahl and the Night Visitors, 2007) as Dr. Bartolo, Stephanie Foley Davis (The Barber of Seville, 2009) as Berta, and William Roberts (The Barber of Seville, 2009) as Don Basilio.
